Now there is nothing in the understanding which was not before in the sense. And therefore to exercise the senses well about the right perceiving the differences of things, will be to lay the grounds for all wisdom, and all wise discourse, and all discreet actions in ones course of life Which, because it is commonly neglected in Schooles, and the things that are to be learned are offered to Scholars, without being understood, or being rightly presented to the senses, 18 Children$ Literature it cometh to pass, that the work of teaching and learning goeth heavily onward, and affordeth little benefit [A3-A4v] Thus the entertainment provided by the pictures is not an end but only a part of the method; nor is the end even the learning of Latin, which remains, at least to Comenius's mind, only a mediate goal.
But while the dancing and singing festivities outside the church on the afternoon of Holy Innocents probably became excessive in places, there is little evidence that the boys' services were irreverent, and certainly the surviving Boy Bishops' sermons are serious exhortations, not parodies or mocks, despite the complaint of later writers, such as the sturdily Protestant Elizabethan critic George Puttenham, who in The Art of English Poesie accused the Boy Bishops of "preaching with such childish terms as to make the people laugh at his foolish counterfeit" 7 As regards the children's singing the mass, some surviving statutes specifically prohibit it while others imply that the children did perform every part of the service including the mass.
