He was a young jeweller craftsman returning to Vancouver from Toronto where, while he was working as an announcer for  Radio, he had completed a course in the European techniques of fine jewellery making at the Ryerson Institute of Technology. He was already committed to a career as a jeweller and believed, as he said to me later, that jewellery was one of the oldest arts and perhaps the most comprehensive of all, requiring an enormous knowledge of materials and all the techniques of manipulation.

He made things quite clear to me some years later on my first trip to Haida Gwaii. We were on a film shoot, and between episodes at T’anuu, with Bill sitting on a moss-draped rock or stump, everything beaded with tiny luminous pearls of mist, I asked Bill why, when he had approached the fork in the road, he had followed the Native path back to his ancestors rather than pursuing the mainstream route for which he appeared to be well prepared. He replied with absolute clarity and certainty that he had observed that modern Western cultures seemed to be lacking in any viable functioning myths that could affirm life for him and give him the sense of inner conviction, knowledge and community that he longed for.

This art, this cultural legacy, fascinated him. I remember that when I was involved in politics and he was also involved, it used to awe him how ten thousand people amongst humanity could get so much attention as the Haida Nation. They have such a reputation and such a presence, he’d say, that you’d think they were a far larger population. He took that and he did his best to understand that. It was much more than art to him: it was a way of being; and those manifestations of ways of being represented ways of thinking, every bit as much as they were ways of seeing.
