Our institutions are all talking about growth, which means they need more faculty. Women make up the majority of several professional areas. This is observed at many medical centers where approximately 65 percent of some fields and of the clinical professorships are held by women.
Education is a key issue on the American agenda. It is impossible to pick up a newspaper almost any day of the week, fifty-two weeks a year, without finding articles raising questions about access to colleges, what is taught in the colleges, and the behavior of students and faculty. One of the reasons that Americans are so concerned about education is that they recognize that if they want to succeed in this country, and want their children to flourish economically and socially, they will need a university education.
We are evolutionary in our nature. There have been simple things like moving a person’s telephone from the right side of the desk to the left side of the desk, and it takes the person weeks, sometimes months to adapt. I recently moved from one house to another, right down the block, but of course laid out differently, and I am still disconcerted.
