The anticolonial movements recognized that the misery of the colonized world came hand in hand with the pleasures of the colonizer. Nevertheless, this tradition of metropolitan radicalism did not always admit to its paternalist relationship with the national liberation struggle.

It bears mention that the al-Dulaimi tribe of central Iraq had immense social power, and that it therefore came as no surprise for one of their own to be placed in a position of authority (whether Qasim appointed her to this post because she was a communist or an al-Dulaimi need not detain us here).
