All our people could see it! It was the light golden colour of a sea lion. We called it wsndzisbalis, meaning sinking driftwood log, because that's what it looked like. It had no head or tail. It shot up out of the water and sunk back in again. Some said it was a giant squid. It would have to be overgrown all right for we could see it jumping all the way from Cape Mudge! The last time I saw it, I was heading from Quathiaski Cove to Vancouver in my boat, and I passed by only five hundred yards away.

My grandfather told me how it was done. Two strokes of the paddle were hard and deep; the third stroke was just a fanning for a rest. Twenty-two men paddled a war canoe. They made good speed. Our Lekwiltok canoes were once down at Gooseberry Point near Bellingham. Our men were with the Lummi Indian people when word came to our village here at Cape Mudge that the Haida enemy was coming down on our village from up north. The men left Gooseberry Point in war canoes when the sun was just setting. They arrived at our village just as dawn was breaking.
