Born in Ohio in 1842, Bierce briefly attended the Kentucky Military Institute prior to the firing on Fort Sumter. Immediately, he volunteered for service and admirably served the Union. Indeed, he saw action on numerous fronts and was eventually wounded. He earned a commission and served on General Hazen’s staff, drawing military maps.
