It also highlights some procedures which may be of interest to, and possibly employed by, the ready mixed concrete producers in Britain. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to stimulate the participants at the conference with the various techniques as used overseas, together with the most interesting developments which should assist the ready mixed concrete producers when comtemplating future expansion or redevelopment.
Concrete was used in bridges by such designers as Hennebique, but was not fully exploited until the first decades of the 20th century by Freyssinet, who used pre-stressing. 17 18 J. H. Ewenson By the end of the 19th century the use of concrete for mass work was made possible by the development of the power driven, on-site concrete mixer. From the earliest days of their use these machines were constructed in two principal types, namely, the continuous and the intermittent or batch mixer. In all the machines developed the main requirement was that the material should be turned over sufficiently to produce a uniform product.
By 1958 the horizontal drum machines began to lose ascendency (they died out altogether by the early 1960s though one or two were in use as late as 1973) in favour of the high level discharge mixer/agitators.
