Example text

A theoretical commitment to Cixous’s notion of transformational writing runs throughout this book. It would be ironic, therefore, if such a position was articulated but not performed. An attempt is made throughout the book to apply these principles to the writing. This becomes increasingly explicit as the work develops. Such a commitment has meant that a good deal of resilience has been required in order for this transformation to be effected within a text that must at some level conform to academic expectations.

I have used her work as a practice, rather than an abstraction, throughout the book, and from the conceptualization stage onward the work resisted attempts to comply with a linear, rational, and objectivized way of proceeding. It never did conform to the model of research in which a question is formulated, relevant literature is read, data is gathered and analyzed, and conclusions are drawn. As soon as I appropriated the notion of l’ écriture féminine as a methodological framework, any remaining plans I had for the work to conform to linear and logocentric expectations ruptured.

Given the theoretical commitment of the study to deconstruction, it is necessary to examine both in order to understand how resilience is performed. This initial analysis is deliberately intended to be fairly straightforward. The point here is not to effect a sophisticated reading of the texts for sake of literary criticism. Rather, it is to explore the texts to see what they yield in terms of developing an early framework regarding the performance of resilience that might then be applied to the final literary text examined— Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.
